Photo Essay: Chocolate City in Guangzhou

Here’s a photo essay from our visit to the “Chocolate City” in Guangzhou.

“Chocolate City” refers to the districts in Guangzhou that have been heavily populated by the African community. The main districts that the African community live and work are the Yuexiu District and Baiyun District.

Post economic boom, many African saw potential in doing business in China hence they migrated to Guangzhou to root their trading business here.

There are varying views towards the African community. Chinese that come into daily contact with the Africans are more accepting of their presence, while the general public tend to feel more strongly against them.

Given that more and more Africans are migrating into Guangzhou, hopefully the Africans and Chinese can find a happy medium to live together.
