Shifting perspectives in Chinese architecture

One but fundamental historical difference between Chinese and Western art is the treatment of perspective – an idea that can be extrapolated through to not only how different cultures understand spatial / temporal distinctions, but also broader worldviews.

Whilst this concept is well-known – it’s still fascinating to see examples of  ’shifting perspectives’ in contemporary architecture.

One example of this is the controversial CCTV Tower in Beijing, by Rem Koolhaas – but perhaps a more evocative expression of this architectural style is the Sifang Art Museum in Nanjing, where we’ve been for fieldwork this week.

In my mind, it’s a beautiful construction, designed by Steven Holt architects, that nestles into the lush Pearl Springs landscape. The building is completed, and is due for opening next month. Check out their site here.
