Chinajoy: Shanghai

The annual China Digital Entertainment Expo & Conference (ChinaJoy) kicked off on July 29th in Shanghai.  This is the 8th ChinaJoy event and despite the Expo fever in Shanghai, it has attracted a huge audience of over 80,000 people for the first two days.

Chinajoy.net, the official website, introduces itself global event that provides a platform for the comprehensive development of the Chinese electronics gaming market.

There’s already been a lot of hype around ChinaJoy on Weibo. There are more than 70,000 posts on ChinaJoy. Some called it a video game expo, some called it an online gaming entertainment event, but most called it a showgirl event. Glancing through the Weibo posts, there was little talk about gaming. The limelight was firmly on the showgirls – many micro-bloggers (females and males alike) uploaded photos of the showgirls and commented on their physical characteristics. Like ComicCon in the US, there’s a strong cosplay element to Chinajoy – but more often than not, the girls seem to appear just dressed in skimpy outfits…

If you don’t get a chance to visit the show, this video has the ‘highlights’ of the event… (Get ready for a 6-minute exposure of ‘flesh’ and about 30 seconds of game footage).
