Iconic director David Lynch has produced a film for Dior set in the backdrop of Shanghai – it’s titled ‘Lady Blue Shanghai.’ It’s now featured on the Dior website.
The ad/film contains many of the hallmarks of Lynch’s work which fans will recognise – the character is a lone tragi-heroine woman/actress (Marion Cotillard), the location is a hotel/single room, apparitions and flashbacks and an eerie building soundtrack abound. How many references to his films can you spot?
For me, this begs the question: is this a film about Dior by David Lynch, or a film about David Lynch featuring Dior? Either way, the overlapping of the brand’s is intoxicating, and it’s a welcome contrast to the usual 30-second perfume spot.
Prada also shot a film set in Shanghai late last year, directed by Yang Fudong – you can view it here.
