Our own Annie Auerbach, Trends Consultant at Flamingo London, was quoted in an article in The Times today. The featured article “Why we are still in love with marriage” is about how young people in the UK still dream about tying the knot, despite often being part of a generation whose parents were part of a large increase in divorces.
Some of the points Annie raises refer to Economics, the Home, and the plethora of Choice in young people’s lives:
“In a time when materialism is seen to have failed, people ask themselves what replaces it, and they look instead to the emotional and spiritual aspects of life. The recession has meant the rise of the importance of the home. Home is where you share your relationship so focus shifts on to the relationship too, and to making that more stable.”
People also start to invest more in their homes. “And if you are both doing this, there is a greater incentive to have the legal protection marriage brings.”
Auerbach believes the trend will continue. “Young people have more choices than any previous generation,” she says. “They can make friends with hundreds of people on Facebook, access information in a flash, travel cheaply. Choice has thrown the doors wide open. So much choice can be bewildering and, in that context, committing to one strong thing is appealing.”
Marriage today is different, she says. “Society doesn’t have the same expectations so young people can experiment with marriage and model it to their own requirements, have fun with it.”
