Shadwell to Shanghai: Sinogrime

As the year closes and many cultural commentators review the past year – and indeed decade – in music, much attention is being devoted to the impact that grime and dubstep have had on the electronic music scene. One of its key London-based proponents has been Kode9, working as an artist under the same name, Hyperdub label founder/curator and music academic with his book Sonic Warfare published by MIT Press earlier this year.

He has recently released a mix which blends the sounds of the East End scene with more traditional Chinese samples. Dubbed Sinogrime, it draws on the  shared urbanity of Shanghai and the East End.

Thanks David. It will be interesting to see if Chinese artists will start appropriating Western culture and putting their own spin on it. Zhang Yi Mou recently did an homage to the Coen brothers movie Blood Simple.
